Stravinsky's scenario for Le Baiser de la Fée is based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, "The Ice Maiden". The ballet was commissioned by Ida Rubinstein and choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska in 1928. The music was a tribute by Igor Stravinsky to Peter Ilyitch Tschaikovsky, and incorporates several of Tschaikovsky's themes and stylistic traits.

First Performance by Company "Ballets d'Ida Rubinstein" : 27 November 1928, Théâtre national de l'Opéra, Paris (France); design by Alexandre Benois; Principal Dancers: Ida Rubinstein (The Fairy), Anatole Vilzak (Rudi), Ludmila Schollar (Babette).
